DISCOVER GRAMMOS
Discover Grammos, a vast mountain range of peaks and valleys that, while marking the border between Greece and Albania, also forms a continuous natural landscape with shared characteristics, which has functioned as a single historical and cultural entity.
Geography of the Region
The Grammos Mountains have always been a powerful natural feature along the indefinite border between the multilingual and multicultural regions of distant Macedonia and nearby Illyria—regions that were at times violently divided and at other times confusingly unified. However, if we examine this seemingly chaotic cartography more closely, we will see the entire historical geography of the Balkans taking shape.
Nature
The entire Grammos mountain range is covered by dense forests of cold-climate conifers and broadleaf trees, while vast alpine meadows stretch across the peaks. These forests, along with the region’s unique fauna—wolves, bears, wild goats, and otters, among others—and its rare flora—including many Balkan and Central European species—comprise a very special natural environment, one that is unusual by Greek standards.
Hiking
At the foot of its major peaks, Grammos offers many opportunities for short hikes that require little in the way of experience, equipment, or stamina. The best-organized network is located around Nestorio. The hiking trails, complete with detailed descriptions, photographs, maps, and diagrams, are presented in a separate chapter. Several of the above trails are currently being marked.
Mountaineering
Both the elevation and the geography of Grammos—long natural features such as ridges and valleys—make it ideal for long hikes. At the same time, the vast expanse of subalpine meadows, which form gentle slopes, gives Grammos the feel of a Central European mountain. Mountaineers' interest is focused on the Eastern Ridge. In the relevant article, the routes are presented with detailed descriptions, photographs, maps, and diagrams.
